How do plants sense and their surroundings and respond?
As sessile organisms, plants must be able to sense their surroundings and respond. This is achieved at the cellular level using signals that control gene expression and cellular degradation pathways. At the same time, these signals can rapidly transverse the entire plant to communicate with distal leaves and roots. In the Woodson lab, we are identifying the signaling mechanisms involved in these processes to understand whole-plant coordination to their environments.
